Project Notes
How This Project Came Together
Medium brown is our most consistently recommended stain for Metro Atlanta homes — warm enough to complement the region's predominant brick-and-tan exterior palettes, neutral enough to work with a wide range of interior finishes. It doesn't polarize like dark espresso or disappear like natural. It gives the oak floor an intentional color while letting the grain read as wood rather than paint.
This documentation project captures medium brown stain across six different homes in Marietta, Atlanta, Alpharetta, Roswell, Johns Creek, and Lawrenceville — same stain specification, different rooms, different lighting conditions. The intent was to show how the stain performs in realistic contexts rather than in a single controlled environment. Kitchen floors under artificial pendant lighting read differently than the same stain in a living room with southern exposure.

The Marietta kitchen is the lead photo: dark cabinetry and granite countertops over medium brown oak. The brown stain bridges the gap between the warm wood floors and the cool stone of the counters — it's the tone that ties the material palette together. On-trend dark cabinetry can overwhelm a light floor or clash with a very dark one; medium brown hits the sweet spot.
The Alpharetta and Roswell shots show the stain in open-plan kitchens with islands — the layouts where floor color does the most visual work because there's so much of it visible. The Johns Creek image is an island kitchen with dark walls and an unusual depth of light from clerestory windows. Every one of these rooms shows a slightly different character of the same stain because oak grain varies from tree to tree.

Satin polyurethane was used in all six homes. In kitchens, gloss finish reads as slippery and shows every footprint and spill ring. Satin maintains enough sheen to look finished and cared-for while hiding the daily evidence of cooking, kids, and pets. Three coats in all rooms.
If you're deciding on a stain for an oak floor and aren't sure where to land, medium brown is the choice we'd make for most Metro Atlanta homes. It photographs well, ages gracefully, hides wear without looking intentionally distressed, and works with both the older craftsman-style housing stock common in Atlanta proper and the newer construction found in Marietta and the north suburbs.

Red oak herringbone · dark stain · bedroom
A red oak herringbone pattern in an Atlanta bedroom was refinished in a rich dark stain — one of the more technically demanding jobs we take on, given that grain runs in two opposing directions at every miter joint. Pre-conditioning the wood before staining prevented blotching, and three oil-based polyurethane coats locked in a semi-gloss finish that shows off the geometry from every angle.
