Acclimation first
Your wood is delivered and acclimates inside your home for several days before install — this prevents gaps and cupping later.

Nail-Down vs. Glue-Down vs. Float: Which Method Is Right for Your Atlanta Home
Nail-Down (Staple/Cleat)
The standard method for solid hardwood over a wood subfloor. Requires a minimum ¾″ plywood subfloor — a threshold most Atlanta homes built before 1990 meet comfortably. Cleats or staples are driven at an angle through the tongue of each board, locking it in place while still allowing the natural expansion and contraction that solid wood demands across Atlanta's seasons. This is the most durable long-term installation method for above-grade living areas.
Glue-Down
Required when installing over concrete slabs — common in Atlanta ranches, split-levels, and newer construction where the main living level sits on a poured slab. We use full-spread urethane adhesive applied with a trowel, which bonds each plank directly to the concrete. A moisture barrier is non-negotiable in Georgia's climate: ground moisture migrating through a slab is the most common cause of hardwood failures on concrete subfloors. We test before every glue-down project.
Floating
Used primarily for engineered hardwood products over concrete or over an existing floor. Boards click or glue to each other at the edges but are not fastened to the subfloor — the entire floor “floats” as a unit. Fastest installation method and the right choice for basements, over radiant heat systems, or when you can't disturb the existing subfloor. The trade-off is a slightly hollow sound underfoot compared to nail-down.
Subfloor Moisture Testing — Non-Negotiable in Georgia
We perform moisture readings before every installation. For concrete slabs, we use the calcium chloride test: the slab must read under 3 lbs per 1,000 sq ft per 24 hours. For wood subfloors, moisture content must be under 12% MC. Georgia's ground moisture and seasonal humidity make this step the single most important predictor of long-term floor performance. We don't install over out-of-spec subfloors.
Acclimation Requirements
Solid hardwood must acclimate inside your home for 3–7 days before installation — the wood needs to reach equilibrium with your home's temperature and humidity before it's nailed down. Engineered hardwood requires a minimum of 24–48 hours. We coordinate delivery timing to ensure your wood is acclimated before the installation crew arrives.

Subfloor Prep
We pull up any existing flooring, snap level measurements across the subfloor, pound down nail pops, fill low spots, and run final moisture checks. Acclimated wood is staged in the rooms where it will be installed.
Installation
Installation starts from the longest straight wall in the room and works across toward the opposite wall. We work in courses, maintaining consistent spacing and checking for square throughout. Pattern layouts (herringbone, diagonal) add time to this phase.
Trim & Final Inspection
Shoe molding, transition strips between rooms, and threshold pieces are installed. We walk the floor board by board, fix any squeaks or loose courses, and do a final cleanup before handoff.
Furniture: We do not move items over 50 lbs — pianos, large wardrobes, refrigerators, and appliances are the client's responsibility to relocate before installation day. We handle standard furniture.
Walk-on times: Engineered floating floors can typically be walked on after 24 hours. Nail-down solid hardwood needs 48 hours before foot traffic. Glue-down installations require 24 hours before walking and longer before placing furniture, depending on the adhesive used.
