LVP vs. Hardwood: How to Decide for Your Atlanta Home
The choice between luxury vinyl plank and hardwood comes down to four factors: moisture exposure, resale value priorities, household wear, and installation method. Here's how each stacks up for Metro Atlanta conditions.
Waterproofing
LVP is 100% waterproof — ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, laundry rooms, basements, and any slab-on-grade install where moisture is a concern. Solid hardwood will warp and buckle if moisture gets underneath; engineered hardwood tolerates humidity better but is still not waterproof. If there's any chance of standing water or subfloor moisture, LVP is the correct choice.
Resale Value in Metro Atlanta
Hardwood adds more resale value in Metro Atlanta's market. Appraisers recognize solid and engineered hardwood as a permanent improvement; LVP is categorized differently and carries less weight in a comparative market analysis. If resale is your primary goal and moisture isn't an issue, hardwood is the better long-term investment.
Wear Layer Thickness
Not all LVP is equal. The wear layer — the clear protective coating over the printed wood layer — determines longevity under foot traffic:
- 6 mil — Builder-grade. Expect 3–5 years in high-traffic areas before visible wear.
- 12 mil — Residential standard. Appropriate for most households without large dogs.
- 20 mil — Commercial-grade. Recommended for households with large dogs or very heavy foot traffic.
Click-Lock Floating vs. Glue-Down
Click-lock floating LVP is faster to install and easier to replace individual planks if one is damaged — a major advantage in rental properties. Glue-down LVP is more stable underfoot, quieter (less hollow sound), and required in most commercial settings. For residential installs over concrete slabs, we recommend glue-down in high-traffic main living areas and click-lock for bedrooms and secondary spaces.
Atlanta-Specific: Temperature Expansion
Georgia's temperature swings — 20°F winter lows to 95°F summer highs — cause LVP to expand and contract more than hardwood. Always leave a 1/4" expansion gap at all walls and vertical surfaces. Never install LVP in a vehicle-accessible garage or an uninsulated sunroom; extreme heat buildup in those spaces will cause planks to buckle or gap regardless of product quality.
Selection Guide
How to Choose LVP Width, Length, and Texture for Your Space
Plank Width
Narrow planks (3"–4") suit smaller rooms and traditional aesthetics. Wide planks (7"–9") are the current standard for open-concept homes and make rooms feel larger — they're also the most popular width we install in Metro Atlanta right now. In general, let the room size guide the width: a small powder room looks best with narrower planks; a great room benefits from wide format.
Plank Length
Longer planks (48"–72") reduce the frequency of end joints and look more like real wood — the continuous grain reads more authentically. Shorter planks (36"–48") are more forgiving on slightly uneven subfloors because the plank doesn't need to bridge as large a span. If your subfloor has minor dips or high spots, shorter planks or added leveling compound will give a better result.
Surface Texture
- Smooth-embossed — Easy to clean, but shows pet hair and dust readily. Best in low-traffic spaces.
- Hand-scraped — Adds visual character, hides minor scratches. Good for rustic or craftsman aesthetics.
- Wire-brushed — The current most popular choice. Subtle texture that photographs well, wears naturally, and feels authentically wood-like underfoot.
Gloss Level
High-gloss LVP shows every footprint and fine scratch — avoid it in family rooms and kitchens. Matte and satin finishes (30–40 sheen rating) are the practical choice for households with children and pets; the low reflectivity hides imperfections between cleanings. Ultra-matte is trending in modern and Scandinavian-influenced interiors where a raw, natural look is the goal.
Atlanta Matching Tip
If you have existing hardwood in adjacent rooms, choose LVP with a warm undertone — golden oak or hickory tones — rather than a cool gray. Gray LVP placed next to warm-toned oak hardwood reads as mismatched even when both are quality products. We carry samples and can hold them next to your existing floors before you commit to any product.
