The Advantages of Factory-Finished Hardwood Floors
Pre-finished hardwood has become the preferred choice for Atlanta homeowners who want beautiful floors with minimal disruption. The finish is applied in a controlled factory environment using UV-cured aluminum oxide coatings that are harder and more durable than anything that can be applied on-site. The result is a floor that resists scratches and wear right from day one — no waiting days for coats to dry, no sanding dust in your home, and no strong finish odors.
Consistency You Can Count On
Factory finishing eliminates the variables that can affect on-site finishing — temperature, humidity, dust particles, and application technique. Every plank arrives with a uniform, precisely applied finish. This consistency is especially valuable in Atlanta's humid climate, where on-site finishing conditions can be unpredictable during summer months. The color you select from the sample is the color you get on every board.
Speed of Installation
Because pre-finished hardwood doesn't require sanding, staining, or finish application after installation, the entire process is significantly faster. Most projects are completed in one to three days, and you can walk on your new floors immediately. For busy Atlanta families, this means less disruption, no need to vacate the home for finish curing, and faster return to normal life.
If you prefer a fully custom stain color or want a seamless surface without micro-beveled edges, our hardwood installation service includes site-finishing options. For existing hardwood floors that need refreshing, our hardwood refinishing team can sand and refinish to your exact specifications. And for areas where moisture resistance is the top priority, explore our luxury vinyl options.
Comparison Guide
Prefinished vs. Site-Finished Hardwood: The Real Tradeoffs
Both options produce beautiful hardwood floors. The right choice depends on your timeline, lifestyle, and what you want the floor to look like over time. Here is an honest comparison.
Prefinished
Factory-applied finish — typically 7–10 coats of aluminum oxide-hardened polyurethane cured under UV light. The result is harder and more scratch-resistant than any finish that can be applied on-site. Walk-on time is 24 hours. No finish fumes in the home, no sanding dust, and no waiting days for coats to dry between applications.
Site-Finished
Sanded and finished in place after installation. The result is a perfectly smooth surface with no micro-bevels between boards, and the finish coat is continuous across the entire floor rather than applied plank-by-plank. Allows full customization of stain color and sheen level. Requires 3–5 days out of the room for sanding, staining, and finish coats to cure.
When Prefinished Wins
Prefinished is the right choice when households with children or pets cannot vacate for multiple days; for rental properties where turnaround time matters; for commercial spaces that need to reopen quickly; and for any project with a hard move-in deadline. The factory finish's superior hardness is also an advantage for high-traffic areas where durability comes first.
When Site-Finished Wins
Site-finished is the better choice when you need to match an existing floor precisely (old-growth heart pine, a specific antique stain), when a custom color is non-negotiable, when a seamless appearance without micro-bevels matters to you aesthetically, or when the room will be vacated anyway for other renovation work and the drying time is not a constraint.
The Micro-Bevel Reality
All prefinished hardwood has a small bevel — a V-groove — where boards meet. This is by design. The micro-bevel hides minor height variation between boards and prevents edge chipping during the manufacturing and shipping process. Most homeowners don't notice it once the floor is installed and furnished. However, if the look of that seam line bothers you in sample photos, site-finished is the better path.
Species Guide
Prefinished Hardwood Species Guide for Metro Atlanta
Species choice affects color, hardness, grain pattern, and how well the floor holds up to your specific household. Here is how the most commonly installed prefinished species compare in the Metro Atlanta market.
Red Oak (Prefinished)
The most affordable and widely available domestic species. Warm pink and salmon tones with pronounced grain. The standard choice for matching pre-1990 Atlanta homes where original red oak floors are common. Janka hardness of 1,290 — excellent durability for residential use.
White Oak (Prefinished)
Neutral gray and tan undertones with tighter, more uniform grain than red oak. The most popular species ordered in Metro Atlanta right now (2023–present). Takes gray, whitewash, and natural finishes exceptionally well. Janka 1,360 — slightly harder than red oak, with better moisture resistance in the grain.
Hickory (Prefinished)
Dramatic grain variation from cream to dark chocolate brown — no two boards look alike. The hardest domestic species at Janka 1,820, making it the best choice for households with large dogs or extremely heavy foot traffic. The rustic character suits farmhouse and craftsman styles common in Gwinnett and Cherokee counties.
Maple (Prefinished)
Very light, creamy natural color with fine and consistent grain — almost no visible figure. Popular in modern and Scandinavian-influenced interiors. Because maple is so light and consistent, it shows scratches more readily than oak. Specify a satin or matte finish to minimize scratch visibility if you choose maple.
Texture Options: Hand-Scraped & Wire-Brushed
Both textures are available across all major prefinished species lines. Wire-brushed is currently the most ordered texture in our installations — it hides everyday scratches between cleanings, photographs well in real estate listings, and feels authentically wood-like underfoot without the pronounced ridges of hand-scraped. Hand-scraped adds more visual character and suits rustic or farmhouse aesthetics.
Engineered Prefinished: Not a Downgrade
Most prefinished hardwood sold today is engineered — a real hardwood veneer bonded to a plywood core. The factory finish is identical to solid prefinished, and the plywood core actually outperforms solid wood in Metro Atlanta's humidity swings. Engineered can also be installed over concrete slabs and in below-grade spaces where solid wood is not recommended. In most applications, engineered prefinished is the smarter technical choice.

Sonia and crew were so professional and completely focused on making sure our wood floors were preserved, restored and brought back to life. I'd reached out to Sonia to come by and give pricing on removing our water logged basement flooring to put in water resistant flooring. Well as my lucky stars were in a line that day, she thought they could repair them and bring them back to almost original. They superseded those expectations by far. Just excellent. Would hire them again. Thank you Sonia and crew.
