There is no single right answer for every Atlanta home — the best staircase style depends on your home's structure, your design goals, and who lives there. Here is how the main options compare.
Open Tread (Floating Stairs)
Each tread is exposed hardwood with no riser — creating a modern, minimalist look with sight lines through the staircase. Open tread stairs require structural modification in most existing Atlanta homes and are best suited to new construction or major renovations where the stringer system can be rebuilt. The result is dramatic, but the scope and cost are significantly higher than a standard renovation.
Hardwood Treads + Painted Risers
This is the most popular staircase renovation choice in Metro Atlanta — and for good reason. Treads in red or white oak stained to match the main floor, paired with crisp white-painted risers, works with virtually any home style from craftsman bungalow to modern farmhouse. It strikes the right balance between warmth, contrast, and achievable cost.
Full Hardwood (Treads + Risers)
The richest look and highest cost option. Risers can be installed in a matching hardwood species for a uniform appearance, or in a contrasting species for visual depth — for example, white oak treads with walnut risers. Every step requires precise fitting, and riser joints must align correctly at each stringer. When done well, a fully hardwood staircase is a showpiece.
Carpet Runner on Hardwood Treads
A carpet runner over hardwood treads is a growing trend that combines the warmth and noise reduction of carpet with the look of exposed hardwood at the edges. It also adds meaningful slip resistance — an important consideration for households with young children or elderly residents. We install the hardwood treads first, then the runner is secured by a carpet installer of your choice.
Atlanta Building Code
Georgia requires stair nosing — the front edge of each tread — to project 3/4"–1-1/4" beyond the riser face. Handrail height must be 34"–38" measured vertically from the nosing, and balusters must be spaced so a 4" sphere cannot pass between them. We build every installation to code. If your project requires a permit, we coordinate that as part of the renovation.

A staircase renovation isn't only cosmetic. Before we install new treads and railings, we address any structural or safety issues that could compromise the finished result. Here is what we routinely find and correct in Metro Atlanta homes.
Squeaky Treads
Squeaks are caused by tread-to-riser friction or a loose connection to the subfloor below. On open-underneath stairs (basement access), we secure from below using screws and construction adhesive — the cleanest fix. When the underside is inaccessible, we inject adhesive into the joint and drive screws from above, then fill the holes before finishing.
Wobbly Balusters
Loose spindles are a safety issue, not just a cosmetic one. We re-glue, re-pin, or replace balusters as needed before installing new treads. If the shoe rail at the base of the balusters is compromised, we replace it as part of the renovation — it would be hidden by new treads anyway.
Out-of-Level Treads
Older Atlanta homes — particularly those built before 1970 — often have stairs that have settled unevenly over decades. We sister the stringers or shim individual treads to bring them level before installing hardwood. Installing new treads over an out-of-level surface creates a floor that looks warped before it's even been walked on.
Nosing Profile Matching
New treads must match the nosing profile of existing flooring where the top tread meets the landing. A mismatch in nosing profile creates a visual and tactile discontinuity that looks unfinished. We carry multiple nosing profiles and can custom-route a match on site when nothing in our stock is exact.
Landing Transition
Where stairs meet the upstairs hardwood, we install a flush reducer or T-molding in a matching species for a seamless transition. Getting this detail right is what separates a finished-looking renovation from one that looks like two separate jobs meeting in the middle.

Sonia and crew were so professional and completely focused on making sure our wood floors were preserved, restored and brought back to life. I'd reached out to Sonia to come by and give pricing on removing our water logged basement flooring to put in water resistant flooring. Well as my lucky stars were in a line that day, she thought they could repair them and bring them back to almost original. They superseded those expectations by far. Just excellent.
