Project Notes
How This Project Came Together
Gunstock is a red-orange warm stain that works best on red oak — the species' natural pink undertone amplifies the stain's warmth rather than fighting it. In a Johns Creek home with cream painted wainscoting, a chandelier dining room, and south-facing windows, gunstock was the obvious choice: it gives the floor a rich color without going brown, and the warm tone complements the home's existing material palette of cream paint, brass fixtures, and mahogany furniture.
The project covered three rooms: a formal dining room with wainscoting and a chandelier, a home office with French doors that open to a covered porch, and a breakfast nook with a bay window. Each room had a slightly different condition — the dining room floor was in very good shape, the office had some compression marks under a heavy desk, and the breakfast nook had a small section near the bay window where direct sun exposure had bleached the surface noticeably lighter than the rest.

Before sanding, we pulled the office desk and chair, masked HVAC returns in all three rooms, and inspected each floor at low angle with a work light to map out the depth of the existing finish and any surface damage. The desk compression marks required an extra sanding pass at 60-grit to level them flush before stepping up. The bleached section in the breakfast nook needed to be brought back to bare wood — gunstock stain is dark enough to unify sun-bleached areas with surrounding wood, but only if the old finish is fully removed first.
Sanding progressed through 36, 60, 80, and 100 grit in each room. On red oak, gunstock doesn't require pre-conditioning — the open grain accepts the orange-brown pigment evenly without blotching. Stain was applied by hand with cotton rags, wiped in sections within two minutes of application. The dining room took two coats to achieve the depth of color the homeowner wanted; the nook and office reached color in a single coat.

The companion photos from Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Decatur, and Marietta are from companion jobs completed the same week — same gunstock specification, different room configurations. The Alpharetta dining room with a chandelier shows how gloss polyurethane reads under pendant light: the sheen amplifies the brass fixture's warmth and creates visual depth in the floor that satin wouldn't achieve. The Marietta breakfast nook with a bay window is the closest analog to the Johns Creek nook — you can compare the same stain in two similar configurations.
Gloss polyurethane — three coats in all three rooms — was the homeowner's specific request. Gloss is less forgiving than satin in daily use, but in formal rooms that see controlled traffic, it shows off the grain character of red oak under gunstock stain better than anything else. The dining room under the chandelier is the standout image from this project: warm, rich, formal, and unmistakably real wood.
