Project Notes
How This Project Came Together
Gunstock stain on red oak in private residential spaces reads differently than in formal rooms. Bedrooms and home offices are lit differently, furnished differently, and experienced at closer range than dining rooms — you're on the floor, standing over it, living with it at eye level when you sit. The warm red-orange tone of gunstock in a bedroom with gray walls creates a strong visual anchor that can feel either grounding or jarring depending on how the floor interacts with the room's light and furnishings.
This Atlanta project covered a master bedroom, a home office with built-in white shelving, a den with built-in bookcases, and connecting hallways — roughly 850 square feet across a late-1990s construction home. The floors were original red oak with the standard contractor-grade finish that was now showing its age: visible scratching across traffic paths, faded patches near windows, and edge wear at doorway thresholds. The homeowner wanted to restore them to a warm tone without going darker than the original color.

Gunstock is slightly darker than the original factory honey stain these floors likely had, which gave us some room to cover uneven aging without it being visible in the final color. We sanded all rooms through 36, 60, 80, and 100 grit, paying particular attention to the hallways where the floor sees the most concentrated wear. The home office required moving the built-in desk components to an adjacent room before sanding — built-ins that sit directly on the floor trap dust and prevent clean sanding to the baseboard.
Stain was applied room by room rather than all at once. Bedrooms are easy to work in sections because the doorways provide natural stopping points; the hallways connecting them required more care at the T-intersections where application directions meet. We kept a wet edge moving through the hallway network to prevent lap marks at the junctions. Gunstock on red oak lifts color quickly — we worked in three-foot sections and wiped excess within ninety seconds.

The Marietta home office with white built-in shelving is the most striking image from this documentation. White painted built-ins against gunstock red oak is a high-contrast combination that works because the warm floor and the cool white shelving exist in complementary tension rather than competing. The floor's warmth makes the white look crisper; the white makes the floor's warmth read as intentional richness rather than age.
Satin polyurethane was used throughout — three coats per room. Satin is the correct specification for bedrooms, offices, and dens because these spaces are used daily, often in socks or bare feet, and the occupants see the floor from a seated or low-angle perspective where gloss sheen would read as distracting. The Duluth bedroom shot closes this documentation with an angled view that shows the grain texture under gunstock at close range — the color is warm and rich, the surface smooth, the wood present without demanding attention.
