Project Notes
How This Project Came Together
Laundry rooms are one of the highest-moisture environments in a residential home — washing machine connections, condensate from the dryer, the occasional overflow from an unattended cycle. Installing hardwood or even standard LVP floating floor in a laundry room is a risk most homeowners learn about the hard way. Stone-look LVT on concrete slab with direct adhesive bonding is the correct specification for this application: it's waterproof, dimensionally stable, and the adhesive bond prevents the floor from lifting or separating if water gets underneath.
This Duluth laundry room had existing vinyl sheet flooring that had been installed over concrete slab — the sheet had delaminated at the seams and corners and was beginning to bubble in the center of the room, which indicated moisture infiltrating the adhesive layer. The sheet was removed, the slab cleaned of adhesive residue with a floor grinder, and the surface leveled and patched before installation.

Stone-look LVT was selected in a light travertine pattern — the homeowner wanted the laundry room to feel clean and finished rather than utilitarian, and the stone pattern reads as an intentional design choice rather than a default. The tile format was 12x24, installed in a running bond pattern offset by half a tile on each course. Larger format tiles in a running bond minimize the number of visible grout-line intersections, which is why this pattern reads as more sophisticated than a standard offset brick pattern at smaller format.
The threshold transition at the hardwood-to-LVT border is the detail that makes or breaks a laundry room floor installation. This transition is the most-trafficked point in the room — every load of laundry crosses it — and if it's not tight and level, the edge will catch, chip, and become a long-term problem. We installed a solid oak threshold bar, flush-mounted to a routed recess in the concrete at the doorway, and set the LVT height to match the hardwood surface precisely so the transition is level to the touch as well as to the eye.
All three photos document the transition detail as much as the laundry room floor itself. The Gwinnett County companion shot shows the same transition from the hallway perspective — looking from hardwood toward the LVT — which is the view most homeowners have when doing laundry. The Atlanta companion shows the threshold detail from the laundry room side, which reveals how the LVT and the oak threshold bar relate in height and finish color. Getting this detail right is the measure of a professional installation in this application.
